Rating for Equipment and Enclosures
A tw0-digit number established by the International Electrotechnical Commission, is used to provide an IP Rating to a piece of electronic equipment or to an enclosure for electronic equipment. The IP code indicates the level, or amount of the protection.

The two digits represent two different forms of environmental influence:

  -  The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects.

  -  The second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids.

The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection from that influence. As an example, a product rated as IP57 would be better protected against environmental factors than another similar product that was only rated as IP43.

IP Ratings Chart - Short Description

First Digit (Protection against ingress of solid bodies)
0 Non-Protected
1 Protected against solid objects greater than 50mm diameter
2 Protected against solid objects greater than 12mm diameter
3 Protected against solid objects greater than 2.5mm diameter
4 Protected against solid objects greater than 1mm diameter
5 Dust-protected
6 Dust-tight

2nd Digit (Protection against ingress of moisture)
0 Non-protected
1 Protected against dripping water falling vertically greater than 50mm diameter
2 Protected against dripping water when the Luminaire is tilted up to 15 degrees from its normal position
3 Protected against spraying water falling on the Luminaire at any angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical
4 Protected against splashing water from any angle
5 Protected against water jets from any direction
6 Protected against powerful water jets
7 Protected against immersion in water under defined conditions.
8 Protected against continuous submersion under manufacturers specified conditions

IP Ratings
Example of rating: IP65
FIRST NUMBER (PROTECTION AGAINST SOLID OBJECTS) DEFINITION SECOND NUMBER (PROTECTION AGAINST LIQUIDS) DEFINITION
0 No protection 0 No protection
1 Protected against solids objects over 50mm
(e.g. accidental touch by hands)
1 Protected against vertically falling drops of water
2 Protected against solids objects over 12mm
(e.g. fingers)
2 Protected against direct sprays up to 15o from the vertical
3 Protected against solids objects over 2.5mm (e.g. tools and wires) 3 Protected against direct sprays up to 60o from the vertical
4 Protected against solids objects over 1mm
(e.g. tools, wires and small wires)
4 Protected against sprays from all directions - limited ingress permitted
5 Protected against dust - limited ingress
(no harmful deposit)
5 Protected against low pressure jets if water from all directions - limited ingress permitted
6 Totally protected against dust 6 Protected against strong jets of water e.g. for use on shipdecks - limited ingress permitted
7 Protected against the effects of temporary immersion between 15cm and 1m. Duration of test 30 minutes
8 Protected against long periods of immersion under pressure
